Volume 2 (P3321-199) covers the period 1870 to 1892, with some later annotations to 1897 and includes papers on: shoes for walking on the water, observations of wave movements, wave propelled models, sailing tricycle, the trochoided plane principle, air compressing pump, engines (solar trochoidal, compressed air, petrol vapour, figure of eight, screw, vibrating, radial rotary, fixed rotary), flying machines powered by rubber bands and compressed air (trochoided plane, revolving wing, single screw, double screw vertical lift, compressed air, gas bag), his views on patent laws, a sluice valve for Rushcutters Bay Creek, list of expenditure on flying machine experiments, reducing valves, torpedo boats, an adding machine, papers read before the Royal Society of New South Wales, lists of people to whom he sent reprints of these papers, draft letters to the journals Knowledge, Engineering and English Mechanic. The references to volume numbers below refer to the four volumes created in 1965 (P3321-198:201). In 1980 volumes one, three and four of these four volumes were taken apart and the contents housed in hundreds of folders, with the volume and page numbers of the four-volume set being recorded on the spine of the folders. For reasons unknown, they were rebound as four volumes. In 1965 the Museum had the six journals taken apart and rebound. Volumes 3 to 6 were journals in the true sense of a daily recording of events and ideas as they occurred. New Guinea, Sydney Observatory and Garden Island, and within those categories chronologically. In them he has grouped papers according to expeditions, activities or interests eg. Volumes 1 and 2 were compiled by Hargrave at a date later than that of their contents. Originally the journals were six bound volumes. Hargrave's journals are a record of his aeronautical work, his travels, ideas and interests from 1865 to his death in 1915.
